This time period was marked by the shrinking world: near-and-far interactions increased and science and technology getting a full-bouted revival. With the inventing of the Gutenburg press, propaganda took on a whole new meaning in this increasingly more global time period. Because the world authority figures were able to reach the public significantly faster, this strongly fueled the motivation for winning the "psychological war".

As nation-states fully came into picture within this time period, having support from citizens was essential for the state's expansion and unification. Glorification became yet another favorite propagandic method used by rulers to garner unification of the peoples; especially with the rise with absolute monarchies. For example, Louis XIV of France proclaimed himself the 'Sun King', and lavished the idea of the divine right upon himself. He created the massively glorious Palace of Versailles, the symbol of French power and aristocracy. In other words, promoting the country's greatness was still in fashion in this age.


The term propaganda itself was first brought about by the Roman Catholic Church, garnering the definition things to be propagated. In 1622, the Congregation of the Propagation of Faith was established, to be led by Pope Gregory XV. The faith controlled missionary activities in the Americas and the East Pacific, and printed books used for spreading and protecting the faith (which were prepared in 'Oriental' languages). Visual media was critical in their usage in this time period, for they were urgent to spread the word of God to all peoples inhabiting the globe.

Ironically enough, the Church utilized one of the greatest technological developments of the time period- the Gutenburg Press- to propagate their propaganda. This psychological tool came into full use with the religious wars of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations, along with other new religious movements such as Calvinism and Lutheranism. Essentially, any document produced by these movements were religious propaganda aimed at gaining supporters for their following.
